When new students come to us to become licensed contractors in California, we know it’s generally because they want to become self-employed business owners and make more money. That’s a great goal, and one we certainly wouldn’t want to steer you away from.
Over the years, however, we have learned that there are other benefits to becoming a licensed contractor, too. In fact, there are a few ways in which your life might improve unexpectedly after you’ve finished one of our programs. Here are four of the most significant that you might not have thought of:
#1 You Get More Respect from Your Colleagues and Coworkers
When you become a licensed contractor, you tell the world that you’re willing to do what it takes to get certified and succeed in your craft. As a result, you’ll likely be treated with more respect by your customers, colleagues, and employees because they see you as a true professional.
#2 You No Longer Feel Tied to Any Job or Project
As a self-employed contractor, it will be up to you to decide who you want to work with, which projects you’ll accept, and how much to charge for your services. That means you’re no longer tied to any particular project or person – it’s all up to you to decide what kind of life you want to live and what sort of work you want to pursue.
#3 You May Discover That You Enjoy Learning New Things
As we have discussed in the past, a lot of new CSLS students are nervous (at first) about “going back to school.” One of the first things we show them is that it isn’t as challenging as they might think. In fact, many return again and again to learn new skills (like blueprints, estimating, and solar energy) and find they really enjoy the process.
#4 You Might Start to Get Bigger Plans for the Future
When you have your own company, the sky is the limit. You may start to think about bigger things, like incorporating your business, hiring employees, or expanding in the future.
Making more money and controlling your own destiny is always a great thing, but we are guessing you’ll enjoy being a licensed California contractor for more reasons than you currently know.
