Almost every business is changing in some ways, but few are seeing the kind of rapid evolution that the California construction industry is. Being a contractor today just isn’t the same as it was 15 or 20 years ago, and it’s important for construction professionals to be prepared.
To give you a sense of why and how, here are four ways the California contracting and construction industry is changing right before our very eyes:
- There are more opportunities than ever before.
You only have to look outside to see that construction is booming in California. People from all around the world want to live here, which means new houses are going up, and businesses are growing just as quickly. That means the market is bigger than ever, and so are the opportunities.
- You can make a good living in commercial or residential construction.
Not only are there more homes being built around California than ever before, but they tend to be bigger and more expensive, and are utilizing environmentally friendly materials. That means an enterprising contractor can make a great living in the residential market, as well as working for business and industrial customers.
- There is more emphasis on being environmentally friendly.
As we already mentioned, going green is a hot trend. That’s leading to construction opportunities in new homes and buildings, as well as for remodeling and modifications to existing structures. New contractors who understand environmentally friendly practices can find a lot of work very quickly.
- Unlicensed contractors are being squeezed out.
Just as a lot of new opportunities are coming along, some of the old ones are closing. For instance, there was a time when unlicensed contractors could make a living. Now, however, regulators and smarter customers are putting them out of business one day at a time.
Big changes can be difficult, or even frightening. But at CSLS we are doing everything we can to make sure that our graduates are ready for what they’ll face after they’ve studied with us.
