Throughout the daily running of your contracting business, you’ll come in contact with a lot of people who make your life easier. Mentors who help you get started, other contractors who fill in when you need assistance, and even your employees can make a big difference in your business success. Here are five ways that you can thank them.

Thank People in the Moment
The first thing that you can do to show your appreciation is to thank people in the moment. It’s tempting to think that you can devote much more time and energy toward a higher level of gratitude, in writing or other methods. But since there’s always a possibility that you may not be able to make your ambitions happen, it’s good to make sure that people know they are appreciated at the time they provide a helpful service to you. That way, if it takes you a little while to come up with an appropriate follow-up, you’re not leaving them feeling unappreciated in the interim.

Write Thank-You Notes
There’s a reason that written thank-you notes are still considered one of the highest levels of etiquette. People like to know that you are happy that they helped you and grateful to receive it. It doesn’t necessarily have to be hand-written on expensive stationery. The right amount of effort depends on the person. For example, if a popular subcontractor agrees to work with you on a tight timeline, you may want to write them a letter of thanks. But if you have an employee who does a great job, thanking them regularly by text message or email may be perfectly appropriate.

Return the Favor
Of course, there are many ways that you can show your gratitude that don’t require you to say thank you at all. If you feel like giving thanks isn’t quite sufficient, you can compensate them for their effort by returning the favor. For example, if you needed to negotiate a certain level of flexibility with one of your employees to get a project done, you may return the favor by granting them a certain degree of flexibility at another time. This shows that you respect the person’s time and effort, not just that they helped you. If you can’t come up with a suitable way to return the favor in kind, you may choose to devote your time to a cause that the person finds important.

Publish Your Gratitude
You don’t necessarily need to make your appreciation public, but there certainly are situations where it benefits all parties. Sometimes, you end up in a situation where you need the help of another business or organization. Highlighting their assistance in a blog post or on your social media may give them a boost or simply make them feel important. And don’t hesitate to showcase your gratitude toward your own workers. They may not be as likely to receive public thanks, so they’ll probably be delighted to receive it.

Give a Token or Bonus
If it’s appropriate, you may choose to follow up your thanks with some kind of a token or bonus to show your appreciation. If an employee worked particularly hard on a project, providing a small bonus or prize for their efforts can serve as a motivator to continue to maintain a high level of quality. Just make sure that this form of thanks is allowed for the type of situation. For example, government employees may not be permitted to accept gifts because it could look like undue influence toward a particular decision.
