What’s The Hardest Thing About Becoming a Successful California Contractor

A lot of new and prospective CSLS students assume that the hardest part of becoming a successful California contractor is passing their licensing exam. And while it’s true that some people do end up spending a few extra hours on studying, our 99.9% pass rate is proof that anyone who has the will and desire (along with the required work experience) can achieve their goal of self-employment. So, if passing the test isn’t as big an obstacle as you might think, what is? Believe it or not, there isn’t necessarily one hard part about becoming a successful contractor – instead, it’s about being good at lots of little things at once.

Here are just a few of the things you’ll have to juggle as a self-employed licensed contractor:

Your construction work. Of course, actually doing your construction work is going to be your top priority. You’ll want to do a great job so you can develop a good reputation and earn lots of referrals. It’s always easier to run a company when you’re one of the best in your industry.

Managing yourself and others. Not only do you have to manage your own time, but if you take on other construction employees, you have to sort out their schedules, workload, and productivity issues, too. Like everything in life, management gets easier with practice.

Marketing your contracting business. If you do great work and have a knack for marketing, you’ll be amazed at how much money you can earn as a California contractor. Marketing is a complex topic, but it all comes down to letting potential customers know why they should hire you instead of someone else. Get the hang of that, and the rest will take care of itself.

Taking care of things like filing paperwork. These are usually the least favorite parts of the job, but you can develop routines to take care of them automatically. And if you get successful enough, you might be able to pay other professionals to pay bills and file forms on your behalf. Just because these are the harder parts of the job doesn’t mean you should let them scare you. With a little bit of patience, practice, and good working habits, each of these disciplines can become routine. In fact, many of our graduates find they actually enjoy the business aspects of running a company after a while.

Plus, by getting your education through CSLS, you take a big step toward getting your contracting business off on the right foot. Not only do we guarantee you’ll pass your exam, but we have an entire department set up to help you with things like insurance, incorporation paperwork, and other details that can make it easier to start your company off the right way.
