In just about every industry, construction included, there are lots of best practices and accepted notions, but most of these can be ignored from time to time or in certain situations. In other words, a lot of the best advice you’ll ever get is flexible and pertains to most, but not all, situations.
There is, however, one absolutely unbreakable rule of contracting that we’d like to pass along: do great work. The more seriously you take your commitment to craftsmanship as a construction professional, the more good things are going to happen for you. After all, when you’re known for being one of the top contractors around, you get word-of-mouth marketing, can charge top fees, and enjoy a business that’s going to be virtually free from complaints.
Of course, doing good work is pretty vague advice. How do you ensure that you’re doing your very best on every construction project? Here are a few good tips:
Ask lots of questions. Everybody has a different idea of what “great” construction work looks like, and you can’t know what your customer wants without talking to them first. So, ask lots of questions, going from the broad to the detailed, until you’re absolutely convinced you know the parameters of the job and the customer’s expectations. Then you can do what you need to in order to exceed them.
Take your time. There can be a tendency to rush through construction projects, especially when they aren’t that interesting or high paying. Why spend more hours than you need to on something you’ve done dozens of times before? You’ll notice that the best contractors often work quickly, but aren’t rushing anything. In other words, they get to be more efficient, but never work in a haphazard way.
Pay attention to the details. This is a simple way of saying treat every construction project as if you are doing it for yourself, or a family member. Use the right materials and finish the job to the best of your abilities. Taking that simple step will separate you from a lot of the other contractors out there who get sloppy when it comes to the little things.
Doing great work is the cornerstone of success in any business, and especially construction. So, once you leave our school, be sure to give it your all every time someone hires you.
