5 Tips for Finding and Working With the Right Study Partner
For a lot of our students, studying to become a licensed construction contractor in California isn’t just about choosing the right school, but also finding a good study partner. After all, learning material is almost always easier with a friend, and it’s a good idea to have someone else around who can quiz you and reinforce key topics.
For that reason, we encourage our students to find others to work with. Here are five tips for finding (and working with) a study partner as you move toward your dream of becoming a licensed contractor:
- Match up schedules, specialties, and personalities. Ideally, your study partner would be someone you like, is available to meet at the same times you are, and will be testing for the same trade specialty as you are. However, any good study partner can be helpful.
- Set a regular time to get together. Having a consistent schedule doesn’t just make it easier to get together; it also makes you more accountable to each other. In other words, you’re less likely to miss an appointment if you know exactly when it’s supposed to be each week.
- Meet in a location without distractions. Libraries, study rooms, and other similar settings without the distraction of TV, cell phones, and friends or family members are always more conducive to learning. It might be hard to give those things up, but you’ll accomplish a lot more in less time.
- Make an agenda for your study sessions. By knowing which subjects you want to cover during a given study session, you’ll have an easier time staying on track and move through the material more quickly. Agree on a plan before you begin each session if possible.
- Encourage each other to keep moving forward. Having a study partner isn’t just about quizzes and notecards. You should also be there to encourage each other and remind one another that the end goals – your careers as self-employed contractors – are moving closer every day!
