Are You Calm Enough to Be a Great Contractor?

As a licensed contractor, most of your actual work will be done with your hands. When it comes to your success as a business owner, though, you might be surprised to find out just how much your mindset matters.

To be more specific, the best contractors have the ability to think clearly and calmly, regardless of what might be going on around them. To see why that might be so important, here are a few instances in which a calm sense of mind is especially critical to the job:

When you have an argument with a customer or employee. No matter how good you are at your job, and how strong your relationships are, you’re bound to have disagreements with customers, employees, or other contractors at some point. Usually, things don’t have to be heated, and keeping your calm (especially if the other person is upset) will help you find a resolution quickly.

When you are feeling pressure in your business. Self-employment can be a lot of fun, but it can also bring a lot of stress. When you’re feeling the worries about marketing, cash flow, and other business issues, it’s critical to remain calm and see a problem for what it really is instead of blowing it out of proportion or making a bad decision.

When you have lots of work to finish in a short amount of time. There can be a temptation for contractors to rush through their work when too many projects are on the schedule. Doing so only hurts your reputation and impacts your ability to get future customers, however. Learn to stay calm and do one thing at a time – it’s better to be a little bit late and finish the job correctly than it is to hurry and hurt your credibility.

One thing each of these situations has in common is that it’s only going to get worse if you lose your cool or start making rash decisions. By staying calm, you’re able to keep control of yourself and think logically about the situation and next steps – in other words, you won’t make a tough situation even more challenging by overreacting.

Luckily, staying calm is a skill that can be learned, and most of us tend to “mellow out” as we become older and more experienced. Still, remember that being calm is a great asset to contractors and make keeping a level head a priority in your career.
