Requirements – Do You Qualify?
Before signing up for a class to help you pass your California State licensing exam, ensure you meet the basic eligibility requirements set by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB):
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have a valid Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and photo ID.
- Have 4 years of verifiable experience as a worker or supervisor (a college degree may substitute up to 3 years; self-employed work may also qualify, at CSLB’s discretion).
Laws are subject to change, and credit for education or self-employment is determined by CSLB. Call us at (800) 481-0310 to confirm current rules.
What Is On The Exam?
The California Contractor License Exam, required for all classifications, has two parts:
- Law and Business Portion: A 3.5-hour, multiple-choice exam on a computer, covering business management and construction law.
- Trade Portion: A 3.5-hour, multiple-choice exam focused on your specific trade (e.g., plumbing, electrical).
Both exams are administered by PSI Services LLC, a testing company partnered with CSLB, at centers across California: Agoura Hills, Atascadero, Bakersfield, Carson, Diamond Bar, El Monte/Santa Fe Springs, Fresno, Irvine, Lawndale, Redding, Riverside, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Santa Rosa, Union City, Ventura, Visalia, Walnut Creek.
Schedule via PSI’s website or call (877-392-6422). PSI offers flexible hours (Monday-Saturday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., some evenings), rescheduling (notify 2 days prior), and ADA accommodations upon request.
Exam Preparation Tips:
- Study CSLB Resources: Use the CSLB’s free study guides and blueprints (available at cslb.ca.gov) for both exam portions. Focus on key areas like California contractor laws and trade-specific codes.
- Take Practice Tests: Simulate the 3.5-hour, multiple-choice format with sample questions from prep courses or books tailored to your trade. Time yourself to build stamina.
- Brush Up on Basics: For Law and Business, review business math (e.g., payroll, estimates) and state regulations. For the Trade Portion, master your trade’s fundamentals—codes, safety, and techniques.

- Plan Your Test Day: Familiarize yourself with PSI’s computer interface via their tutorials online, and visit your test center’s location beforehand to reduce stress. Get a good night’s sleep before the exam.
What To Bring To The Exam?
Bring your appointment letter and a valid government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license)—no other items are allowed. PSI will provide a dry erase board, marker, and sponge for note-taking; personal items like calculators or phones are not permitted. Upon arrival at the PSI center, staff will verify your ID and appointment letter before directing you to a cubicle with a computer. The exam begins with an electronic thumbprint and a brief introductory video. Results are available immediately: if you pass, you can proceed with the licensing process; if you fail, you will need to reschedule (with a fee of $60 per exam). Please arrive 30 minutes early and check PSI’s website for specific locations and availability.
Paperwork
Before scheduling your exam, complete CSLB’s admissions process: submit an application, provide proof of identity, select a business entity, pay fees, and more.
After submitting your application, you’ll be required to complete a fingerprinting process for a background check. It’s standard procedure to ensure all contractors uphold the industry’s integrity.
Preparing paperwork can feel overwhelming, but our expert counselors simplify the process—guiding you through forms, fees, insurance, and corporation requirements. Call us at (800) 481-0310 for help.
