Does Your Contracting Business Workspace Need a Spring Cleaning?

Spring is a great time to take stock of what you have and get it in order. Before you know it, you’ll be busy with projects and have less time for organization. If your workspace is in need of some care, you can get it into shape without a ton of work. Here are five things you can look at to help get your workspace ready for another busy season.
Deep-Clean the Workspace
It’s safe to say that you spend at least a little time each day sweeping and cleaning up your workspaces so that you’re ready to go tomorrow. If you have a little extra time, it makes sense to invest in a deeper cleaning of each station:
- Wipe down or wash equipment first.
- Move the equipment so that you can inspect the flooring and the walls behind it.
- Relocate tables so that you can wipe down walls and mop the floors.
This kind of detail work helps to minimize debris accumulation in spots that a broom or vacuum can’t reach.
Maintain Equipment
Although spring cleaning tends to focus on cleaning tasks, it is wise to look at it as maintenance, too. Maintaining your equipment is a great way to prolong its lifespan and ensure that it is ready to go every time you need to use it. The problem is that when you use equipment on a daily basis, you may not find the opportunities to maintain it during a typical workweek. When you have a light week or two, go through each piece of equipment and inspect it for signs of wear or damage. You may need to take larger pieces in for regular service.
Make a Schedule for Upgrades
Once you have assessed the general condition of your equipment, you can make a plan for any possible upgrades you will need to make throughout the year. Upgrades can be a significant investment, and you may not be able to do it whenever you want to. The best time to replace equipment is while it is still functioning as you need it, but at the end of its lifespan. Setting a replacement schedule helps you to avoid delays due to equipment breaking unexpectedly. Try to spread out the schedule during the year so that you are not spending too much money at once.
Update Files
If your office for your business is completely out of control, now is the time to get it in order. People who have to wear a lot of hats throughout the business day often find that they get to the end with no energy to spend on filing. But once you get to tax or invoicing time, you will wish you invested the effort into keeping everything organized. Take at least an hour or two to clear off your desk and make sure that every piece of paper is in the right location. If you have missing documents or receipts, give yourself the opportunity to look for them before you throw anything away.
Inventory Goods
Now that your workspace is clean with equipment that is ready for use, you can inventory your materials and supplies. Keeping an inventory is important because you need to know what you have at any given point in time. Not having an inventory makes you more likely to double-order supplies and end up with too much more than you need. Organize your inventory by category. Now is also a great time to change your organizational system, particularly for small pieces or equipment that is constantly getting lost. Better organization will make things easier to find in the new year.
