Four Tips For Dealing With Slow Times in Your Contracting Business

Earlier this month, we noted that even the best, most professional construction contractors are occasionally going to have to deal with complaints and client issues. The same could be said of slow periods – nearly every successful contractor or construction company has them from time to time.

Although there are a lot of things you can do to keep yourself busy in a larger sense, it’s hard to avoid slow times altogether. That’s because economic turmoil, canceled projects, and other factors out of your control sometimes get in the way of an otherwise-smooth calendar. And when they do, you could find yourself with some unplanned downtime, trying to figure out how to put more projects back on the books.

Based on our decades of collective experience, here are some of our best tips for dealing with slow times in your contracting business:

Keep marketing, but don’t go overboard. On the one hand, it’s important to keep looking for new business when things are slow. But on the other, you don’t want to spend more than you have in your budget and make things worse.

Cut back on what you don’t need. You might have subscriptions, part-time employees, and other “variable” costs you can cut back on while business is slow. See if there are ways you can save money to take off some of the pressure in the short term.

Be more flexible with new projects. One way to get busy again is to take on new construction projects that you normally wouldn’t consider, either because of their location, fee, size, or expertise. Obviously, you don’t want to take on an unprofitable project or bite off more than you can chew, but being a little flexible is better than not working at all.

Stay patient and know that things will happen. Most slow periods are just that – quick interludes in an otherwise successful business. Remember that, stay calm, and keep your eyes open for new work.

It can be hard to stay calm when it seems like business is drying up, but experienced California contractors will tell you that it’s just part of life. Keep doing the things you do best, and you can be sure that business will most likely turn around in time.
