People aren’t born with great leadership skills, they must be nurtured and developed through practice. As a small business owner you are wearing a lot of hats, juggling marketing, sales, quickbooks, and payroll. It’s easy to get caught up in the notion that more is better when it comes to your involvement in every facet of the business, succumbing to the idea that “if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.” However, I’m going to make the case that one of the central roles of a leader is delegation and give you tips on how to do it responsibly, respectfully, and then reap the rewards.
When you’re running a business you’ll inevitably be faced with a great deal of challenges, and surely the temptation to handle every crisis yourself will be there as your competence and experience is something you can trust. However, if you can’t learn to trust in your employees to perform their jobs, including the hiccups inherent in the process of work, then you risk becoming more of a crisis manager than THE manager, having less time to handle the responsibilities that you alone are qualified to perform. Learning to delegate tasks to capable, responsible employees is a necessary step in building your successful business. It frees you up to focus on where you add the most value while simultaneously communicating to your employees that you have faith in their skills.
Hone your effectiveness in the area of communication to ensure that your expectations are clear and try at all times to be fair in your dealings. Employ a system of accountability wherein each person knows their role and that they know who to approach about on-site questions. A well trained employee is an investment that pays out hand over fist in the time and money you will save on mistakes avoided. Having a trusted foreman or overseer and a thorough training process goes a long way towards making sure you are able to acquire new clients, build relationships, and grow your business. Delineate the job, delegate responsibility, and designate time to be the boss. Your business deserves a leader with the time to lead.
