How to Shop for a Computer for Your Contracting Business

A computer is one of the most important purchases you will make for your contracting business. But how do you know which one to buy? With this information, you’ll have an idea of the types of technology that will work best for your business.

Storage Capacity
One of the first things that you’ll need to look at is storage capacity. All computers have some kind of storage, usually relying on a hard disk drive or a solid-state drive. Hard disk drives are a little slower and consume more battery power, but you can get them with a higher capacity. Solid-state drives are faster, but capacity tends to be much lower. When evaluating capacity, look at the size of the files that you are typically working with for your business. If possible, buy more than you think you will need, so that you don’t run out of storage during an important project.

Processor
Processor speed depends on the types of work that you will be doing on the computer. For example, if you are invested heavily in design or computer-aided drafting applications, you may need the best processor available. There are some types of software that are designed to use processors with multiple cores, so you should investigate the processor needs of the software that you intend to use. Otherwise, for basic office use, you probably don’t need an extremely fast processor. Buying a processor that is much more than you need can increase the total cost of the computer by a surprising amount.

Screen Size
The best size for the screen depends on the type of computer that you are buying. Most laptops come with a screen size that ranges from 13 to 17 inches. Keep in mind that smaller laptops cost less, but they may be more difficult to use during consultations with clients. It’s harder to crowd around a small screen with any degree of precision. Even if you do decide to buy a laptop, it may be worth investing in a separate screen. Current models start at about 22 inches in diagonal length, and you can turn them upright or horizontal at your convenience.

Operating System
You essentially have two choices for operating systems, and the one you make is probably going to depend on what you are used to using. Specifically, you’ll need to choose between Windows and Apple OS, unless you’re planning to buy a Chromebook. Apple OS is designed to run on Apple machines, which tend to cost more. With Windows, you have more flexibility in computer brands and prices. It’s a good idea to make a list of the software that you plan to use and make sure that they will be readily available and current on the operating system of your choice.

Replacement Options
If you need to use your computer on a daily basis, it’s smart to think about how you will handle problems with it. If you’re lugging the laptop to the construction site and back, there’s always a possibility that it will sustain some kind of damage that requires repairs or replacement. While you should keep backups of your important data or store as much as possible in the Cloud, you still need a device that you can use to access it. Consider purchasing more than one machine at the same time, so that you aren’t taken out of action if one of them breaks.

Buying a computer can feel overwhelming, with all the options out there. By looking at what you really need, it will be easier to narrow down the list. To learn more about how you can have a successful career in construction, visit CSLS today!
