Keeping Up with Local Politics
You are now a Licensed Contractor! Congratulations! You put a lot of time and effort into getting here. Are you putting the same effort into making sure that you stay here? Many contractors don’t and end up losing their license or getting trapped in ruinous legal situations because they made a simple mistake.
They refused to stay aware of the legislation.
As of mid-July, the Contractor’s State License Board or CSLB, has made decisions on only two changes of note, however one of them will affect almost 14,000 sales personnel while the other covers a $3,000 increase in bond coverage and comes with a penalty of license revocation.
For contractors who take a few moments each day to make certain that there have been no new and surprising changes, this is not a problem. Unfortunately, there are all too many who become complacent and find themselves in trouble. They either don’t know or don’t care that part of their job is to check with the state board. Often, these are the contractors that find themselves without a license.
Obviously, you are not one of these since you are freshly out of school and newly into the business, but will you stay that way? Will you let your license be in danger and end up on CSLB’s Most Wanted Board?(yes, they really have one)
If not, then how can you be sure to stay aware and not let the habit slip?
It’s easy enough to take a page from marketing professionals and add a bookmark to your toolbar. Most professionals have a list of websites that they check every morning to stay in touch with new developments in their industries such as materials, equipment, trends, sales, and legislation. If you haven’t already, maybe it’s time.
Another quick and easy tip is to set a daily or weekly reminder on your phone. Whether in the morning with your coffee or as you’re putting your desk to rights for the night, look for a time when you can access your computer or phone with no interruptions for the few seconds it takes to click the link.
Don’t lose your license to laziness. The effort and time you’ve devoted to getting that license is something that you can never get back and it can be an even longer process to get it reinstated when possible.
If you’re not sure where to look, click on the link below or ask your school advisor for other places to keep in touch with changes that the CSLB makes throughout the year. For the sake of your business, you’ll be glad you did.
