Social Security Press Release – Contractors State License Schools

Did you know? You No Longer Need to have a US Social Security number Get Your California Contractors License.

In September of 2014, California Bill SB 1159 was passed into law. This bill prohibits, except as specified, any entity within the CA Department of Consumer Affairs (including the CSLB), from denying licensure to an applicant based on his immigration status.

This means that, no later than January 1st, 2016, the board that governs California contractor licenses (CSLB) will accept all applicants who choose to use their Individual Tax Identification Numbers (ITIN) in lieu of a social security number. However, CSLB plans to implement these changes in 2015. Please be advised, it is within their sole discretion to decide when their official start date will begin — up until January of 2016.

You may begin submitting applications with your individual tax ID number now, regardless of when CSLB implements the new law. There is a very good chance that your application will be granted; but it is not the responsibility of our school to ensure acceptance of your credentials.

Until the changes have officially been made, the board may require additional documentation, or deny your application. If your application is denied, we will place your program on hold with us for up to 5 years from the date of enrollment.
