CSLS offers a number of different options for men and women who want to study for their licensed contractors exam. Along with traditional classroom choices, students can opt to learn at home through online, textbook, and recorded self-study materials if they choose.
Which choice is right for you? To help you come to a decision, here are a few pros and cons of self-study learning options for new contractors:
- Pro: It’s less expensive, and you can do things on your own schedule.
If you’re looking to save money, or need to study for your licensed contractors exam early in the morning or during the middle of the night, self-study could be your best option. In terms of budget and flexibility, it’s always going to be a hard option to beat.
- Con: It’s easier to procrastinate without an instructor and other students.
While some students find it most convenient to study at odd hours, the reality is that a lot of people don’t have the discipline to prepare for an exam when they’d rather be sleeping, watching TV, or spending time with their friends and family. If you could use an extra push now and again, classroom learning might be the best option.
- Pro: Some self-study courses can be completed faster.
Some self-study courses (including our own crash course) can be completed within days if you are focused enough and have room in your schedule. That kind of pace wouldn’t be possible in a traditional classroom setting.
- Con: You might miss out on some advantages (like computerized practice exams).
Not only do classroom students get to interact more closely with other students and instructors, but they may find it easier to take advantage of CSLS tools (like computerized practice exams) that ultimately make it easier to take and pass the test.
The bottom line: Self-study is usually best as a supplement, rather than a primary learning option.
Self-study doesn’t have to be an either/or option. Talk with a member of our admissions team and see if it makes sense to attend classroom sessions and then back them up with a last-minute review to give yourself the highest chance for success.
